Social media has a way of bringing people together. Wedding photographer and PW contributing editor Nadia Hung connected with designer Yuriko of Vintage Origami through Instagram and captured the stylist in her Vancouver studio. Nadia says, "I met Yuriko through Instagram and I was immediately drawn to her creativity and passion for the wedding industry. Her originality and work has been a true inspiration! It was fun to visit her studio and see how she makes everything beautiful."

What's the story behind your business name?  Vintage Origami reflects my clientele, my personal heritage and my penchant for vintage-era d

If you could describe your style in one word, what would it be? Is it often reflected in the weddings you design?  Personalized. Every single wedding I design for my clients is personalized to them. I make sure that the d

Tell us about the wedding scene in Vancouver at the moment. In British Columbia, our wedding scene is deeply influenced by the beauty of our natural surroundings. Our province is well-known for its vast array of wineries and orchards. I like to include wine barrels as decorative props or display jam jars as wedding favours as many locals here will practice the art of canning after our bountiful harvest of seasonal fruit. British Columbia is lush in our outdoor settings so our destination brides want to be surrounded by grapevines or have a gorgeous view of Okanagan Lake as their ceremony backdrop.

We love the idea of sourcing cool, vintage furniture for a living! Have you always been a collector? While I love vintage, I find that my personal taste is a mix of modern and the elegance and rarity of the vintage past. I have always been a collector and I've always cherished my family heirlooms--whether it was a coin collection from my grandfather or a vintage camera collection started from my late father. Growing up, I would find items that others would discard and I would repurpose them and restore the value in the eyes of others. I now understand that this hobby was prepping me to enter into this rewarding and creative career.

Any bride favorites in your inventory that you don't mind sharing?  It would have to be my antique wooden library card catalogue that I use as a guest sign-in table at wedding receptions. Another favorite is my antique metal steam trunk (that weighs three times my weight) that I use as prop for a ceremony welcome table. The cardboard drawers are lined in vintage newspaper.  Another classic is my selection of vintage tufted parlour settees and chairs. These are perfect to create intimate lounge areas and they are usually the coveted spot to commune at a wedding.

Dream wedding venue and why? My personal dream wedding venue would include a ceremony and reception by Lake Okanagan so I could share in the peacefulness of our serene waterfront. The ceremony would include my birch arbour with a chandelier and chiffon draping billowing lightly from the breeze across the water. This space would have my guests intimately gathering with the clinking of their wine glasses as they enjoy the bounty of our Okanagan wineries. The venue that most closely reflects this scene is Hotel Eldorado here in Kelowna. The boardwalk ceremonies are charming and reflective of the vintage nautical heritage that Kelowna boasts about with our many water and boating sports.
