Tired of cliché versions of a tropical wedding? We looked to nature for a different approach! Four vignettes in glorious colors of papaya, banana, mango and pineapple will give your wedding a taste of the tropics. Put on your sunglasses—these contemporary details are for couples who don't shy away from bold color and modern style.
(left to right) A whimsical floral design of Singapore tiger orchids, billy balls, ranunculus and song of India is shaped to look like the pineapple in a hand woven basket.
Mango has long been a favorite Hawaiian fruit. The fiery reds and striking oranges of its skin reveal the fruit is at its most succulent. Uncommon Envelope's invitation and reply card pay homage to the popular island delicacy and set the tone for a casually elegant wedding. Yvonne Chapman's abundant centerpiece of poppies, pin cushions, peach cymbidium orchids, kangaroo paw, gloriosa lilies and hybrid ranunculus captures the essence of the mango. The intense color palette is stunning against a pale peach chiffon overlay that lends sophistication with a modern appeal.
In keeping with the theme, Chefs Russell and Karolyn Stokes, owners of Kauai Cuisine, prepared Hayden mango soup, served chilled with kiwi, strawberries, baby basil and blood orange reduction. Russell, having lived in Hawaii for many years, has gained a tremendous respect and understanding of local ingredients and flavors, and how to use them to his best advantage. He and his wife Karolyn stress the importance of cooking with foods at the height of their flavor—for this dish they used mangoes fresh off the tree. "If you start with the finest, freshest, purest-tasting ingredients, it is difficult to go wrong," says Karolyn.
A clever play on the distinctive papaya seeds, this hand-beaded invitation is an ultramodern reflection of a classic local fruit. Ecuadorian roses, alstroemeria, calla lilies and poppy flowers are striking against black lava stones edged with papyrus reeds.
A pinwheel of diver scallops is accentuated with sage and pineapple vinaigrette.
Guests will savor this caramelized banana "pancake" with milk chocolate ice cream, liquid haupia and mint syrup. Bear grass loops around a contemporary centerpiece of Pieris japonica, green goddess calla lilies, local foliage and orchids. The underside of the cymbidium orchid petals perfectly mimic the shape and hues of a newly sprouted banana. Lemongrass-crusted opah is topped with banana chips, crushed peanuts, cilantro and banana Thai curry sauce.
A combination of washi paper and silk string held with a brass clasp give this Asian invitation a tropical twist. The diamond–stitched fabric is a subtle allusion to the pineapple's natural pattern.A lush bouquet of mini cymbidium orchids, song of India and Pieris japonica is tucked inside a hand woven bouquet holder by Maui artist Odin Von Schenk.
