A native of the island of Kauai, Gelston's path to becoming a photographer was lined with serendipitous opportunities. Lacking the talent to become a professional surfer, and without the desire, aptitude, or money for college, Gelston realized he needed to learn a trade. A good friend introduced him to professional photography, and he shot his first wedding when at 19 years old at the Coco Palms Hotel.
For the next few years Gelston mainly worked in photo labs, learning film and print processing. On a job in Germany he was introduced to industrial photography and large format film cameras. Hopping between Europe and Hawaii, Gelston learned from talented photographers while working on jobs for clients like Harper's Bazaar, Playboy, YM, Nike, Nordstrom, and Nieman Marcus. In 1998 he turned his focus to developing a personal photography style and starting his own photography business on Kauai.
